My black and white photographs depend uniquely on my encounter with the subject and the light.
The sense of my work is to reveal the essential, never to illustrate. I have removed the viewfinder on my camera so that I am present in the space and nothing is between my eyes and the subject. The camera allows me to look directly and to escape voyeurism.
The nature of my work is closer to sculpture and painting than to traditional photography. Each of the silver gelatin prints are unique in that my developing and printing processes are very specific, involving the creation of many masks that allow certain parts of the print to be exposed to light for varying lengths of time. Because of this process, no single photograph can be identical to another and the images convey a sense of drama through the contrast of darkness and light. For me, light is the act that brings you to the deepest black.
